Safety Tips For Emergency Garage Door Repairs

After a few years of constant daily service, especially without regular maintenance, it is very likely that your garage door may break down. You have probably experienced the following scenario: you get into your car on an ordinary working day, click your remote, and wait as the door opens. You back out of the garage and click the button again. Nothing happens - the garage door remains stuck in its open position, or closes halfway before stopping. Or it doesn’t open in the first place. The largest moving object in your home, which has opened and closed faithfully day after day, year after year, has broken. You need it fixed as quickly as possible, so you need to prepare for emergency garage door repairs. Here are some tips you should keep in mind.
Be Cautious Around The Door
You don’t know exactly what the problem with the door is. It could slam shut unexpectedly, a spring could snap and cause damage to anything or anyone nearby. It is vital that you exercise extreme caution when near the door. Don’t step, walk, run or move under the door, whether it is closing or opening, or is suspended in a half-open position.
Don't Leave Kids Unattended Around The Garage
For the same reasons mentioned above, you should tell your kids to stay away from the garage until the door is fixed. Keep the opener out of their reach, and make sure they do not play or loiter under the door when it is opening, closing, or is in the open position. They should also stay away from the door, even if it is closed, if there is any chance that one of the springs has worn out and could snap.
Don't Attempt to Repair Springs and Cables Yourself
It is never a good idea to attempt to repair garage door springs yourself. These parts are under extremely high pressure and can snap at any time, causing severe damage or injury. These parts require special tools for adjustment and removal - and should only be handled by experienced professionals. Some homeowners do try to go the DIY route, but it is not recommended.
Call A Professional
Aside from keeping yourself and your loved ones clear of the broken garage door, there is not much you should do at this point, except call a professional garage door technician.
