Garage door weather seals and weather stripping play an important role in keeping your garage and home insulated. When was the last time you checked the seal around the edges of your garage door? Learn why they are important here.
Older garage doors might not even have a weather seal. That could be costing you money and exposing you to risk. The addition of a garage door weather seal is a fairly simple job that could make the world of difference.
Some garage doors have large gaps between the door itself and the frame. These gaps allow cold or hot air to come into the garage and cause extreme temperature fluctuations in your garage. The gaps can also allow precipitation to enter the garage and cause damage to your cars or other belongings. A garage door weather seal is fitted all around the door to close those gaps that compromise the insulation of the space. They are made of sturdy pieces of vinyl that go around the top, bottom, and sides of the garage door.
Although the weather seals are made from strong and sturdy vinyl, they do eventually need to be replaced. The seal becomes worn from hitting the floor every time the garage door closes, and the elements can also affect the wear and tear.
For these reasons, you need to check your weather seal regularly. Look for signs of cracking, sagging or not sticking tight to the garage door frame. The frame itself also needs to be checked for damage over time. Damage may cause the weather seal not to stick the way it is designed to, thereby reducing its efficacy. If this occurs, the frame must be repaired before you replace the seal.
The major advantage of having weather strips on your garage doors is that they protect your vehicles. Your car is one of your biggest investments and deserves to be looked after. In the same way that your car requires regular maintenance, so does its home.
A weather seal that is in good condition will prevent dust, pollen, and debris from blowing into your garage and adhering to your car or other important belongings that you keep in the garage.
In the rainy months, a weather seal will prevent water that pools in your driveway from seeping into the garage and reaching your vehicles. Apart from possible damage to vehicles and other possessions, a pool of water on the slippery floor of your garage poses a danger to people walking in the garage.
Garage doors can cost a lot of money. A weather seal on the bottom edge of the door will help to absorb the impact of hitting the concrete every time you close the door, thereby extending the life of the door and saving you money in the long run.
Think of all the boxes, tools, and other items that you have stored in your garage. If these items are exposed to cold air, hot air, water, dirt, pollen, and debris, they too could be damaged. Water seeping into the garage can result in mold or pest damage to your belongings, which is often irreversible. If your garage is not properly sealed, you may as well be storing the items outdoors.
In summer, roaches, ants, spiders, and other insects could head into your garage to escape the heat. In winter, pests may take refuge in your garage to ride out the cold. A tight weather seal will close gaps that could allow insects and pests into your garage to destroy your belongings.
